About Our School
George Washington Academy was founded on five principles; Responsibility, Citizenship, Trustworthiness, Loyalty, and Patriotism. Students are strengthened and prepared to be responsible contributors to society. We cherish the best in each individual and enthusiastically educate our children to joyfully embrace the challenges and wonders each of their futures will bring.
GWA is a K-6 school built to meet the needs of each individual student, by providing differentiated instruction with consistent curriculum in a safe, welcoming, supportive, and positive setting, while maintaining patriotism, high expectations, and mutual respect.
With our small classroom sizes and regular intervention time we ensure that no child is left behind. Periodic benchmarking, through DIBELS (Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills) and Galileo, allows us to monitor students growth and provide flexible groupings based on ability level.
But, we aren’t all business at GWA, we like to have fun too. Implemented in the Fall of 2017, is our elective program. With this program 3rd-6th grade students can choose up to 8 different electives each year; two electives per quarter and each quarter changing their class. They can choose from classes such as Orchestra, Zumba, Sports, Drama, STEM and many others.
We also have a very fun sports program for 3-6th grade students. We compete against other charter schools around our area in Volleyball, Cross Country, Basketball, and Soccer.
Our Learning Program
Our evidence-based reading program, Success For All is a comprehensive school reform program designed to ensure success in reading for all children. It provides schools with a K-6 reading curriculum that focuses on phonemic awareness, phonics, comprehension, and vocabulary development, beginning with phonetically-controlled mini books in K-1. Cooperative learning is extensively used at all grade levels.
We also use the Saxon Math program in a differentiated setting. Saxon Math is a curriculum that blends teacher-directed instruction of new material with daily practice of previously learned concepts and skills. Students are explicitly taught efficient procedures for solving problems. Frequent monitoring and feedback are given to students on the correctness of their procedures.
These are both evidence based effective programs that we believe will meet the needs of each one of our students.
