Welcome to George Washington Academy!

Dear Families:

Welcome to George Washington Academy, home of the Patriots!
We are grateful for the privilege of working with your child and your family this 2017-2018 school year and are excited about all the learning adventures that lie ahead.

George Washington Academy is a Kinder-6th grade school with an inclusive and welcoming atmosphere, a strong focus on families, personal responsibility, and basic American values. We teach reading, spelling, and writing with the Spalding methods and materials. Our math program is centered on the Saxon math curricula. Both of these programs have been proven to increase student success in these key curricular areas.

We teach using Madeline Hunter’s Seven Steps of Instruction for each subject which is very effective in increasing student achievement. Every 9 weeks, your child will be asked to choose a Personal Interest Project based on that term’s theme. They will then research, write, create, and make an oral presentation of their findings for the class. Parents are invited to attend their child’s PIP presentation.

Additionally, we have recently started an electives program in which students in grades 3-6 have the opportunity to select an enrichment class for Mondays and Wednesdays, and a separate class on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The selections are made quarterly, so the students have the opportunity to participate in up to 8 enrichment classes a year. Elective classes include Band, Orchestra, Choir, Drama, Peer Mentoring, Zumba, Sports and Study Hall. The K-2 classes also participate in electives in their classroom, and we encourage our amazing parents to come in and share their hobbies and special talents with our students.

GWA is so blessed to have such talented and willing parents, and encourage parent involvement. If you wish to visit our school, please sign in at the front office and obtain a visitor’s pass before going to your child’s classroom. This helps promote safety. GWA is also a member of the Desert Pines Sports League and competes with other small schools in the area. Our sports include Cross Country, Volleyball, Basketball and Soccer and are open to grades 3 – 6. Our beautiful gym is the host of many of these sports activities.
Children attend school Monday through Thursday from 8:00 A.M. to 3:30 P.M.

We encourage student involvement at our school, and have a student council. We would love to increase our clubs and organizations, so if you are interested in sponsoring or helping with a club, or organization, please contact the school at 928-440-6228.

We are very thankful to have such an amazing Parent Advisory Committee who meet monthly to discuss upcoming school events and other important information for the school. We strive for excellence in communication, and send out a weekly newsletter that includes important information, as well as the lunch menu. Our school participates in the school lunch program.

Our live morning assemblies are a great way to start the day and include announcements read by student readers to promote public speaking, the Pledge of Allegiance, and moment of silence, followed by a brain gym Zumba routine. We encourage our parents to come check out these amazing assemblies. We also have contests to encourage our students’ talents and have started a monthly LEGO creation competition and creative writing contest. We also promote cursive writing and are starting a cursive club.

I have been with the Edkey Corporation for 5 years, and feel very grateful to work with the amazing staff, students and families of George Washington Academy. Together, we will work hard to make sure every child is known and create the leaders of tomorrow.
